Mr Gerard McGowan is an award winning cataract and vitreoretinal surgeon. His NHS base is at the Tennent Institute of Ophthalmology in Glasgow (Gartnavel General Hospital) which is the largest eye department in Scotland. In addition to standard ophthalmic consultant surgeon training within the UK, he has completed two world class one year advanced vitreoretinal fellowship training programmes in Glasgow, and The Royal Victorian Eye and Ear hospital, Melbourne, Australia. He offers private cataract and vitreoretinal surgery (no posture macula hole surgery) at Ross Hall Hospital Glasgow. He is known for his relaxed demeanour and personal approach with his patients.

Mr McGowan has won numerous prizes throughout his career including the Lachlan MacNeil travel scholarship 2011, Dorey/Lister RCOphth travel award 2012, the Pauline and Oswald Lapp ARVO travel award 2013, the 2014 St Lazarus charity award and the ARVO M.I.T prize 2014.
Mr McGowan serves on the UK royal college of ophthalmologists surgical training faculty, which trains junior surgeons throughout the UK. He also sits on the national ophthalmic selection panel. He has given 40 international presentations and published in highly regarded peer review journals. He has recently been appointed to the ESASO VR faculty to train European vitreoretinal surgeons in Switzerland. He is regularly invited as a guest speaker to international meetings and live surgery events as a guest surgeon. Mr McGowan is one of the UK's busiest cataract and vitreoretinal surgeons. He is head of the prestigious vitreoretinal fellowship at the Tennent Institute of Ophthalmology in Glasgow.
